Yellow Hat – metal head sculpture

This is a real fun piece and I really enjoyed making this. It is another sculpture that almost made it’s self – in that I looked at assortment of parts and see a hat, hair and a head. And it is always a good feeling to recycle found objects to create art.

Combine 1 – sculpture created from combine harvester

Combine 1 is created from many blade holders originally used on a combine harvester. Four blades are welded together to create a diamond then the six diamonds are joined and finally mounted on the beech base. I recently exhibited it at my Lost & Foundry 2 exhibition at Williams Art in Cambridge.

I am so please with this sculpture as the finished work is exactly what I had in mind when I looked at my pile of scrap metal. And I had so much creating this sculpture – it is very tongue in cheek and is based on the weird and wonderful creatures that can be found in the deep parts of the oceans and that so fascinated me as a child.

For the paint finish, I used a range of car paints and many coats of lacquer.

Nothing like A Taste Of Orange in the summer

Just finshed a new metal table titled A Taste Of Orange created from scrap and found metal.

I wanted to create a table that would not only be functional but also work as a work of art – a sculpture, a painting and a decorative object. Once again it is made from recycled metal tubes and plate that have been shaped and sculpted.

The table is finished with a durable powder paint that is a bright summer orange. Finally, I hand painted the table top with vibrant enamel paints that also add to the citrus theme.

My first new sculpture of 2010, made entirely from scrap metal including car parts and a scrap sash clamp. I really enjoyed making this sculpture and wanted to inject a bit of fun ‘comic strip humour’ into the work.

Detail shows the title on the weight

This metal sculpture is created from reclaimed found objects. The legs and feet are cut from an old plough, the hips and pelvis are parts from a old van and a tow bar. The base is a an old iron weight, from a weight lifting set, salvaged from knee deep mud and took a lot of cleaning to get through years of rust. It was fun welding as I had to heat the iron first then butter weld with specialist arc rods before I could attach the foot and leg.

The weight is has the words ‘Body Sculpture’ as part of the casting which I used for the title of the sculpture. constructed from found objects. This was one of the very first metal sculptures I constructed.

Loads to do… But I love it

Just purchased a big 5mm plate for a new workbench Dave (new Ashwinstudio sculpture technician) and I have built from scratch from 40mm box section. We saved a fortune building it in-house and it is custom built for the space and use.

A new member to the Ashwinstudio team

I would also like to announce a new member to the Ashwinstudio team, David Grant, who is the to work as a sculpture technician although he will be mostly helping with the construction of the sculptural furniture. He is a close friend of mine who I have known, along with his family, for years: David is also a first rate engineer, welder and has a good eye for design. Believe me, when working with steel girders or stripping engines apart, two hands are better than one. It is also great to have someone to bounce ideas off.
