Out of the blue – new metal sculpture

By Ashley, 06/08/2011 2:17 pm

I have just completed a new metal sculpture titled ‘Out of the blue’ and it is another artwork created from steel tubing and metal boules. I chose the title as; the idea did literally come out of the blue, it is painted with a range of blues and I am a big fan of blues and rhythm ‘n’ blues music.

Contorta – Metal Sculpture

By Ashley, 05/25/2010 2:58 pm

For this sculpture, titled Contorta, I wanted the work to have an organic feel to it like branches and tree roots. With this in mind I added new bends to the reclaimed rollcages that I had already cut down to smaller lengths. And  although I had spent much time planning it in my mind  the sculpture took on life of its own as it developed and grew. Once again, I used French boules sets for the larger balls and also added small mini boules. To me the larger balls are like fruit or tubers and the smaller balls are like new growth in Spring as it spreads…

Contemporary Furniture – Boule Chair

I reclaimed the metal tubing from scrap roll cages, then selected and cut sections I liked the shape of and added additional bends to get the flowing organic shape I was after. Also, as I cleaned the tubing up I really liked the polish and grind marks so continued it across the entire chair and to preserve this finish I have used a clear metal sealer and lacquer. The metal balls welded on the feet and arms are from a second hand French boule set (otherwise known as pétanque).

I’m really pleased with this and already have had a lot of interest in the chair. I am already constructing two side tables in a similar style and hopefully more chairs – but each one will be unique!
