Ridger Bird – Sculpture in the Sanctuary

By Ashley, 07/26/2011 3:15 pm

I am pleased with how the Ridger Bird sculpture has been positioned beside the water.

This metal sculpture is created from farm implements; the tail is an old potato fork, the wings are skimmer points from a plough and the head is a ridger for earthing up potatoes.

The Ridger Bird – Metal sculpture

By Ashley, 03/07/2011 1:40 pm

The Ridger is a mythical bird that, as legend would have it, hunted mercilessly for the potato.

The metal sculpture is created from farm implements; the tail is an old potato fork, the wings are skimmer points from a plough and the head is a ridger for earthing up potatoes.

Pax Arva Colat – Metal sculpture

The title Pax Arva Colat means Let Peace Cultivate the Fields and is the motto of the World Ploughing Organization. The sculpture is created from plough shares.

“And everyone neath their vine and fig tree
shall live in peace and unafraid,
Everyone neath their vine and fig tree
shall live in peace and unafraid.
And into ploughshares beat their swords
Nations shall learn war no more.
And into ploughshares beat their swords
Nations shall learn war no more.”
From the song ‘The Vine and Fig Tree’

Detail shows the title on the weight

This metal sculpture is created from reclaimed found objects. The legs and feet are cut from an old plough, the hips and pelvis are parts from a old van and a tow bar. The base is a an old iron weight, from a weight lifting set, salvaged from knee deep mud and took a lot of cleaning to get through years of rust. It was fun welding as I had to heat the iron first then butter weld with specialist arc rods before I could attach the foot and leg.

The weight is has the words ‘Body Sculpture’ as part of the casting which I used for the title of the sculpture. constructed from found objects. This was one of the very first metal sculptures I constructed.

Had some success with sourcing interesting objects (engine parts, farm implements etc) and so far have several old engines to dismantle. But still need loads more – no such thing as too much.
